The nitrofurans furazolidone, furaltadone, nitrofurantoin, and nitrofurazone (which contain a characteristic 5-nitrofuran ring) were commonly employed as feed additives for growth promotion and, to prevent bacterial and protozoan infections to livestock, aquaculture, and bee colonies (ie, gastrointestinal enteritis caused by E. coli and Salmonella spp., fowl cholera, and coccidiosis black heads).
